Training Students & Teachers


In 2008, the British Council awarded a multi-institutional DelPHE grant to Makerere University, School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London, Gulu University in Northern Uganda, and the Association for the Advancement of Higher Education and Development (AHEAD) for the project, training teachers and students to write and illustrate bi-lingual books for primary school children in Northern Uganda.┬áThe wider impact of the program is linked to the provision of quality education and peace building activities in Northern Uganda. The project addresses the urgent need for training programs for teachers, and reading materials for children. Training teachers equips them with more skills to deliver better quality education to students, while putting books in children’s hands will promote literacy.

The practical training and involvement of teachers in primary schools in Northern Uganda will result in the development of manuscripts of children’s books addressing issues relevant to the needs of children in the local community, such as post-war trauma, HIV/AIDS, children’s rights, and gender equality that supplement the Ministry of Education’s teaching policies. By producing texts that address critical issues relevant to the community, the project also supports peace and stability in the Northern Region.

The following outputs have been achieved or are currently being pursued: new graduate and undergraduate courses in children’s literature will be developed at Makerere and Gulu Universities; academic staff and graduate students in the partner institutions will attend conferences and present their research; increased gender parity and numbers of women taking part in research and partnership courses; and at least 30 teachers from Northern Uganda will be trained in the skills of writing children’s books. These books will be published in the third year of the project and distributed back to Primary Schools in Northern Uganda, to be taught in the classroom by the authors themselves.
