Annual Academy on Youth Employment

Annual Academy on Accelerating Youth Employment in Africa (AYEA) A partnership of AHEAD and the Institute for Youth Employment Studies (iYES)

AHEAD has partnered with iYES to start running an annual international Academy on Accelerating Youth Employment in Africa. It is designed to be a highly specialized one-week residential course whose aim is to groom professionals who are particularly specialized in youth employment issues with a strategic outlook. Targeted participants include current and prospective practitioners in the youth employment field across Africa.

Participants will be exposed to innovative tools for analyzing the often-ignored complexity related to 21st century youth employment. The course explores innovative approaches to youth-specific policies and programming, capable of translating into gainful and sustainable employment for the youth on a mass scale. The initial Academy will be hosted in Uganda, July 5th – 12th 2015.

The target audience for the Academy will include the following:

  • Policy makers and staff in youth support organizations (including int. development agencies)
  • Policy makers and staff in government departments dealing with youth affairs
  • Interested researchers and consultants
  • Senior educationists in secondary and higher education
  • MPs representing youth in parliament
  • Youth representatives

As a longer term intervention, plans are already under way to start offering an innovative specialized post graduate programme, Masters in Strategic Youth Employment Studies (MA.SYES) starting 2016. It will be packaged in a blended format, combining face to face, action research and online learning (distance learning). The annual summer school will serve as its face to face platform.  This programme aims at creating a pool of highly qualified professionals who combine practical and academic astuteness in the specific field of promoting optimal youth employment in the 21st century context. Such professionals are lacking on the African continent at the moment, yet the need is enormous and will continue to grow over decades to come. AHEAD and iYES are working towards partnering with a world class university to offer the programme.
